Overview

This full day virtual workshop covers key information and practical and proven techniques for successfully applying for government positions.

By the end of the day, you will be better able to confidently participate in government recruitment processes.

Who should attend? 

Government staff and external applicants for government positions.

Workshop Structure

The workshop is split in two sessions and includes the whole job applicant experience – from understanding the foundations of public sector selection processes, preparation as an applicant, written application (resumes and statements), to interviews and other assessment methods.

Session 1: Navigating Public sector recruitment and selection and developing your written application and resume

Sessions 2: Interview Skills and other assessment methods.

Available as one full day or two half-day sessions.

 

What to expect in Session 1

The first session of the workshop comprises 2 modules. These modules introduce foundational knowledge to help understand the recruitment and selection process within the public sector and your role as an applicant and then focuses on developing a tailored, professional resume and writing high quality applications/ supporting statements.

Module 1: Navigating Public Sector Recruitment and Selection

This module provides the foundation for the whole workshop and is required to be undertaken prior to modules 2 and 3.

As a foundation of the workshop, this module will help you to navigate the public sector recruitment process from an applicant’s perspective, learning how to identify your key ‘selling’ features to build a competitive advantage.

You will gain insight into how to understand what a panel is looking for and how to put your best self forward.

Topics include:

  • Navigate public sector recruitment & selection – an applicant’s perspective
  • Understand & apply competency frameworks
  • Identify your key “selling” features and best evidence
Module 2: Developing your Resume and Written Application

The second module focuses on developing skills to prepare your tailored professional resume, highlighting your strengths, as well as writing effective applications/ statements to best position you for success.

Topics include:

  • Articulate your strengths including your transferable skills
  • Present your capabilities through a professional resume
  • Prepare high quality written supporting statements
  • Adapt to different application requirements – 1 or 2 page statements, response to merit criteria etc
  • Appreciate what selection panels (and recruiters) look for at the shortlisting stage
  • Use your written application to set you up for success through the rest of the process

What to expect in Session 2

The second session dives deep into interview preparation and practical techniques to give you the skills and techniques to help you do your best.

Module 3: Interview Skills

This module will focus on developing interview skills and strategies. You will learn how to effectively and efficiently prepare for interview, including anticipating different kinds of interview questions and learning how to close an interview. You will learn techniques to help you manage your nerves while confidently “selling” yourself in the interview. We will include hints on handling on-line interviews. Our goal is help you maximise your success in interviews for government jobs.

Topics include:

  • Prepare well for selection interviews
  • Understand behavioural, scenario and other typical types of questions
  • Plan your responses but remain flexible
  • Closing an interview
  • Manage yourself in an interview – handle nerves & avoid typical applicant errors
  • Develop non-verbal communication strategies for success
  • Understand how to respond to complex interview situations integrating multiple selection techniques (work samples, work tests, psychometric assessment)
  • Gain key tips for success in remote interviews

By the end of the workshop, you will be better able to confidently participate in government recruitment processes
