Career Details

Michelle commenced with Merit Solutions in 2013 after returning from a 12 month engagement in an executive HR management position with a rapidly growing company delivering construction and mining services in Papua New Guinea.  In this role, she had responsibility for the development and implementation of the HR framework for the company as well as the ongoing management of the HR function.

Entering the human resources field in the public sector in 2002, Michelle held senior HR roles with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), and previously Queensland Transport.  Her experience covers the delivery of corporate and divisional HR services across various business areas and in geographically diverse locations.

During her time with TMR, Michelle held roles across the breadth of the HR function. She brings strong skills in developing and implementing strategic people management initiatives, workforce strategy and planning, workforce analytics and reporting, and complex case management.  Michelle had a lead role in the administration of the Queensland Public Agency Staff Survey (QPASS) which involved collation, analysis and presentation of results throughout the Department, and the development and implementation of strategies to address identified issues.

Recruitment and Selection

Michelle has extensive experience in managing recruitment and selection processes, particularly in the public sector environment, with a strong background in applicant assessment, preparation of credible reports and coaching panels to achieve good recruitment outcomes.   Michelle’s recruitment and selection experience covers all levels of government and a wide range of roles, including technical, operational, management, project, administrative and specialised.  She also has recent exposure to machinery of government changes and the impact this has on the recruitment and selection function.

Change Management and Stakeholder Engagement

Michelle has held responsibility for a range of change management projects, with some notable successes in Maritime Safety Queensland involving structural realignment, the transfer of staff and the development and implementation of major changes to entitlements and conditions of employment for specific employee groups.

Michelle’s experience ranges from a major whole of department reviews to small business unit specific projects with results including an improved Departmental Performance Management Framework and positive cultural shift in work teams.

To achieve success, Michelle uses a collaborative approach, engaging stakeholders and networks through effective planning and strong communication strategies.

HR Reform and Conflict Resolution

Michelle has worked with business areas to identify and analyse organisational and workplace issues.  Through research and analysis, she has reviewed HR systems, policies and processes and worked actively with managers and staff to develop and implement suitable strategies for improvement.

With a strong background in managing complex cases of a sensitive nature, Michelle specialises in reaching mutually beneficial outcomes when managing contentious and complex HR issues.  Michelle’s experience includes working with dysfunctional work teams to improve productivity and resolving situations of individual conflict.
